The MPS Grounds Department is in search of a hard-working, dedicated CREW LEADER with a passion for keeping our grounds, fields, and landscaping looking top-notch!  Lead a small team responsible for all types of grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, spraying, landscape maintenance, snow removal, and all duties normally performed in the turf industry. 

 

Shift time is generally 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM Monday through Friday, with some opportunity for overtime. General Summary: This role requires routine manual labor associated with grounds maintenance and performs various duties requiring moderate physical strength.

 

The crew leader provides direction and leadership to a small team performing a variety of skilled landscaping and grounds maintenance duties to maintain and improve campus grounds, athletic complexes, and landscaped areas. In addition to acting as a working coordinator, the crew leader operates and maintains special machines and assists management with training to ensure employee safety and superior results.  

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

1. Leads a crew performing maintenance and repair duties on District grounds: 

 

• Completes assigned marking and maintenance tasks associated with athletic, activity, and playground equipment and parking areas

• Completes assigned tasks associated with a prescribed snow removal program
• Completes tasks associated with the prescribed District-wide beautification program
• Assists in eliminating rodents.
• Identifies and reports needed grounds/exterior maintenance
• Identifies and reports playground equipment problems and performs repairs
• Assists in laying sod, planting grass, and identifying turf problems
• Assists in painting parking lots
• Assists in servicing, operating, and making minor repairs to assigned grounds equipment
• Assists in installing landscaping projects
• Assists in preparing and maintaining softball, baseball, football and soccer fields
• Assists in repairing sprinkler systems
• Assists with training programs 
• Checks and services power mowers, tractors, trimmers and all landscaping equipment
• Cleans drainage and similar areas
• Cultivates water, fertilizes, and trims lawns, shrubs, hedges, trees, and ground cover
• Drives District vehicles to haul supplies and equipment to and from work areas
• Lubricates and sharpens mowers
• Mounts signs
• Mows and edges turf grasses using hand and power equipment (72” ZTR or larger)
• Performs varied duties in planting, transplanting, fertilizing, and propagation of ornamental plants
• Performs snow removal, sand, and salt operations by using snow removal equipment, skid loaders, tractors, pick-ups with blades, and sand/salt spreader mounted pick-ups 
• Sprays pesticides, special weed control, and other turf and lawn chemicals as required
• Sprays shrubs, trees, weeds, and turf grasses
• Sweeps walkways, removes paper and rubbish, and empties garbage cans as required
• Trims trees from ground, ladder, and aerial lifts using tree saws, chain saws, and loppers
• Uses hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, undergrowth, and debris from grounds and landscaped areas

 

2. Provides Leadership: 

 

• Serves as lead worker of a small grounds crew

• Maintains schedules and records

• Oversees equipment and chemical usage
• Checks the work of crew members and keeps supervisors informed of any concerns that arise with equipment or personnel

• Oversees area work assignments and ensures completion
• Inspects assigned areas to detect grounds maintenance problems 

• Recommends training programs for crew members

• Demonstrates expertise in operating landscape and grounds equipment (e.g. mowers, front end loaders, tractors, skid loader, etc.)

• Demonstrates expertise in operating multi-blade mowers and other large production or high quality style mowers
• Performs minor maintenance and repair to power mowers, edgers, rototillers and leaf blowers

 

3. Completes maintenance work orders as assigned

 

4. Performs additional tasks as assigned and associated with the District’s grounds maintenance operations 

 

5. Works proactively and responds appropriately and positively to changing requirements

 

Marginal Job Functions:

 

Assists with maintenance and repair duties on District grounds to a lesser capacity:


• Performs general exterior custodial duties either seasonally or incidentally to grounds-keeping activities
• Digs post holes and trenches
• Installs sign posts
• Performs minor asphalt repair work
• Performs minor fence repair
• Performs minor maintenance and repair to power mowers, edgers, rototillers, leaf blowers, painter sprayers, field marking equipment and etc.

 

Qualifications:

 

1. Education Level: High School diploma or equivalent


2. Certification or Licensure:


• Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one, and meet all District requirements for driving school vehicles
• Certification, diploma, and/or license covering grounds maintenance is desired
• Pesticide applicator certification is required; must complete this requirement to retain District employment 


3. Prefer successful completion of related courses

 

4. Preferred Knowledge:


• Background in completing tasks in areas such as mechanics, irrigation, metal-work (welding), landscaping, and turf maintenance
• Background operating and performing servicing and minor maintenance on grounds and farm equipment
• Knowledge of landscaping/grounds materials, tools, and equipment
• Knowledge of operation and maintenance of motorized equipment used in grounds maintenance work
• Knowledge of plant diseases, pests, and methods/materials used for control and eradication
• Knowledge of safety procedures, methods, supplies, and tools used in planting, cultivating, and caring for turf grasses, shrubs, and trees
• Knowledge of soil preparation
• One year experience in a lead or supervisory role is preferred
• Two years' experience with a comparable large-scale grounds operation or continuous full-time professional experience performing commercial groundskeeping and landscaping duties required
• Two years' experience with a school district is preferred

 

5.  Abilities:

• Operate and maintain power mowers and other grounds maintenance equipment
• Perform skilled grounds maintenance work
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and others
• Safely use hand and power tools of landscaping and groundskeeping work
• Schedule, assign, and coordinate the work of crew members
• Use motor vehicles (e.g. van, tractor, truck, mower and etc)
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing
• Follow verbal and written directions
• Complete complex tasks in areas such as welding, mechanics, irrigation, metal-work, landscaping, and athletic/activity area layout and management as assigned
• Perform assigned duties with minimal supervision
• Presents a neat clean appearance
• Work overtime as required
