General Summary: The interpreter/translator is responsible for listening to, understanding, and translating spoken or written statements from one language to another.
Interpreters will be called on an as needed basis depending on district needs. This is not a full time or part time regular position. Interpreters will be paid $22 per hour.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Facilitate effective communication between two parties that do not speak a similar language by converting one spoken or written language to another, including educational terminology and colloquial language, without altering, omitting, or adding anything to what is stated or written, or without explanation.
- Act as an impartial and unbiased official translator at conferences or meetings to mediate discussion, including parent-teacher conferences, Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings and Special Education Meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information as stated or written, refraining from any public discussion or offering an opinion concerning a matter in which one is or has been engaged.
- Continuously assess one’s ability to deliver interpreter or translator services, immediately conveying any reservations about one’s ability to satisfy an assignment.
- Read aloud documents in a language other than that in which they were written.
- Convert written materials from one language into another, such as District or school documents or publications, which reproduces the content and style of the original.
- Edit and proofread text to accurately reflect language, using dictionaries and glossaries for reference.
- Conduct oneself in a manner consistent with the expectations of all Millard Public School employees.
